WINEormous Valiance winesI had the good fortune to meet Jim and Von Hurson earlier this year at the Family Winemakers tasting at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. What got my attention was an email they sent me talking about their Valiance Wines. What makes them unique is that 100% of their net profits are donated to programs that support and benefit wounded Veterans and their families. We had a wonderful visit and I left so impressed by what they are doing and with a desire to share the extraordinary thing they’re doing.

Shortly thereafter, I brought their four wines to Santa Maria with me to share with a group of writers from the International Food Wine and Travel Writers Association. We sat and tasted these lovely wines. The Acclaim series recognizes service and achievement, with the Acclaim White honoring the WASPs (Women Army Service Pilots) and the Acclaim Red honoring the Army Reserves.

The Dedication series pays tribute to heroes with the VRM Red honoring C. Richard “Rick” Rescorla, who helped evacuate 2700 people to safety from the North Tower on 9-11. The VRM Pinot Noir honors Captain Robert “Robbie” Risner, who heroically nudged a crippled F-86 out of harm’s way with the nose of his aircraft.

These are solid wines and a pleasure to drink. What makes them even better is the knowledge that with each bottle purchased money is going to wounded Veterans and their families. Prices range from $16 to $38. Thank you, Jim and Von. The world could use more folks like you.
